Santa Clara

Santa Clara, the “mission city” was built around the Santa Clara Mission which was established in 1777.

The mission is still located and on the grounds of Santa Clara University. Once an agricultural community like the rest of the valley, the beginning of the semiconductor industry in the early 1960s sparked the beginning or Santa Clara, and little of its rural past remains. The city owns and operates its own electric utility, Silicon Valley Power, that provides electricity at a much reduced rate to residents. Santa Clara is the headquarters to hundreds of global high-tech companies, including Intel. It also features a massive convention center and Levi Stadium, home to the San Francisco 49ers football team. Nationally known swimming and synchronized swimming teams are found in Santa Clara.

The residential area near Franklin Mall is known as the Old Quad and features many fine Victorian and Craftsman homes on charming tree-lined streets. Also, a newer planned community, Rivermark, can be found in Santa Clara. It has homes, shopping, a park, swimming pool and an elementary school. Santa Clara has some excellent public and private schools and features farmers markets and large shopping malls.
